Hyundai Elantra Accelerates On its Own Causing Serious Car Accident
February 26th, 2013
Eliz Lushaj was driving his two thousand eleven Hyundai Elantra when it abruptly began accelerating on its own. He was on a highway near Dallas when he called nine hundred eleven asking for help. He begged the nine hundred eleven operator to help him stop the car, but there was nothing the dispatcher could do to control the vehicle. Lushaj suffered a one hundred twenty mile rail of terror as police officers railed behind and beside him, attempting to escort him away from congested areas on onto clear highway roads. His wild rail ended violently after an 18-wheeler pulled out in front of him and his car crashed, rolling four times.
Miraculously Lushaj was coherent after the accident, albeit police said that he looked to be in a state of shock. He was driven to a nearby hospital where he was treated for several violated bones and a few cuts and scrapes. It’s amazing that he survived the collision considering the high rate of speed he was traveling. Vehicle defect accidents are often fatal, especially when unexpected acceleration is involved.
Lushaj’s parents said that he is has sustained permanent physical and emotional harm because of the ordeal and car accident. It must have been horrifying to be in such a powerless state in the driver’s seat of your own car.
Police officers said that Lushaj performed well under the circumstances. He had to swerve out of the way of several cars, sometimes even pulling over on the shoulder road at elevated rates of speed to avoid collisions.
This is the 2nd time that a late model Hyundai accelerated abruptly. In Korea, where the cars are manufactured, a Hyundai Sonata abruptly accelerated through a crowded city without the driver prompting it. Seventeen people, including the driver and his passenger, suffered severe injuries from the out-of-control vehicle.
After this incident Hyundai reported that it was installing brake override systems to eliminate the chance of unintentional acceleration. But was there a recall? Lushaj’s vehicle is a 2011, so it was most likely manufactured in 2010. There have been no recalls by Hyundai reported to fix malfunctions that would cause unexpected acceleration.
Toyota recently recalled thousands of vehicles to fix unexpected acceleration problems. This is the 2nd time in the last year that a unexpected acceleration has been reported by the driver of a Hyundai vehicle, yet no recalls have been ordered. There could be other instances of unexpected acceleration by drivers that have not reached major media outlets. Check the comments on this link; an individual by the screen name Mkovach242 reports that he was given a fresh car by Hyundai after his car accelerated abruptly. He also claims that the same thing happened to the fresh Hyundai they gave him.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Board needs to look into these cases to see if a recall is warranted to protect drivers and pedestrians from this apparent threat. If you are injured due to a unexpected acceleration or other vehicle defect, you should consult a vehicle defect attorney to discuss your rights. If have not had issues, but you drive a Hyundai, please contact the manufacturer and see whether your vehicle is under any recall.
