Eoin Cameron

Eoin Harrap Cameron (Four January one thousand nine hundred fifty one – twenty three June 2016) was an Australian radio personality in Perth, Western Australia and member of the Australian House of Representatives. Until August two thousand fifteen he introduced the ABC’s Perth local station seven hundred twenty ABC Perth breakfast demonstrate, [1] regularly receiving top ratings for the most popular breakfast radio showcase. In August two thousand fifteen he took extended leave while recovering from surgery as a result of a two thousand thirteen car accident. [Two] In January two thousand sixteen he announced that he was retiring, but would comeback to the studio “temporarily . to say a decent goodbye to listeners”. Cameron began his very first job in radio at age Legal, at the Albany radio station 6VA in 1969. Since then he has worked in many Perth radio stations including one thousand eighty 6IX, 94.Five and 6PR, as well as Melbourne station 3DB. [Five] His last fourteen years, until his retirement, were as breakfast presenter for seven hundred twenty ABC Perth, where he consistently topped the ratings for that time slot. [Four] He was described by colleague Geoff Hutchison as having a “delicious need to delight and offend in equal measure”, and known for regularly disregarding political correctness. [6]

He has made minor television appearances in The Grant and Cameron showcase and The Entertainers, both on Channel 9. [7]

In 1993, Cameron stood for the seat of Stirling in the federal election, winning the seat for the Liberal Party but instantly went into opposition with leader John Hewson losing the election. He held the seat in the one thousand nine hundred ninety six election that brought John Howard to power, before losing to Labor’s Jann McFarlane in the one thousand nine hundred ninety eight election. Cameron was born in Climb on Gambier, South Australia, the 2nd of ten children. [8] [9] He left school at fourteen [9] and did a multitude of jobs including farm labourer and roustabout. [8] [Ten] His family moved to Western Australia when he was 16. [9]

Cameron was married, and had three children. [7]

Cameron had bipolar disorder, which he attributed to having been raped by the headmaster while at a Catholic boarding school. [9] [11] [12] [13]

In two thousand thirteen he was involved in a car crash and suffered serious back injuries, requiring numerous operations over the next two years. Ongoing problems as a result of the injuries compelled his retirement in 2016. [Two] [Four]

On twenty four June 2016, it was announced that Cameron had died overnight from a suspected heart attack, while visiting family in Albany, Western Australia. [14] [15]
