APD identifies suspect involved in RV pursue through Albuquerque
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – The Albuquerque Police Department says the suspect involved in a pursue through the city is now in custody.
“I witnessed this indeed erratic-driving RV and I eyed him come across the median and hit the car in front of me,” said Hanna Gasper.
Police are not sure how many people, like Gasper, were involved in the crash, but they say at least one man was flown to UNM Hospital. At last check, he was listed as critical.
APD says it commenced late Tuesday night in the North Valley, when detectives attempted to arrest 40-year-old David Barber for numerous felonies.
Officers say the man made off in an RV, but police didn’t give pursue, yet. They followed from above in a helicopter until police say the man attempted to run over police when they laid down a spike unwrap.
That’s when police say they began a ground pursuit, following the RV across town.
APD says officers chased Barber to the area of Washington and Indian School where a K-9 officer got into a crash with someone else.
Police say both the officer and the other person involved are OK.
Police say, eventually, supervisors called off the pursue, telling it was too dangerous. It all came to an end on the westside, near Coors and Irving. That’s where police say there were even more crashes, but are not providing details about how many cars or people were involved.
Right now police say they are treating this investigation as they would an officer-involved shooting, even tho’ they don’t believe any shots were fired.
“How this pursuit went, what could we have done better and what was just a result of this violent felon putting thousands of lives in danger, based on his own selfish needs,” explained Albuquerque Police Officer Tanner Tixier.
Numerous agencies responded to this scene including the Albuquerque Police Officers Association and Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office.
Police identified Barber on Wednesday evening. They say he has an extensive criminal history and will likely face both state and federal charges.
APD also took a woman into custody, but her role in this incident is still unknown.
