Gwinnett County government department goes will make their funding requests for two thousand eighteen to a panel of residents this week.
The seven-person Citizens Budget Review Committee will hear business plan presentations from each department head every morning from Monday to Thursday at the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center at seventy five Langley Drive in Lawrenceville. The format might sound mundane, but it’s a key step in the process of developing the county’s budget.
The department goes outline fresh initiatives that they want to see funded in the next year’s budget while also highlighting issues they may be facing, or expect to face in the future.
“I am grateful to these talented individuals for volunteering to serve in this capacity,” county commission Chairwoman Charlotte Nash said in a statement. “Each person brings something different to the table, which is valuable as we listen to departmental needs and plans for the future, review revenue projections and prepare the two thousand eighteen proposed budget.”
This year’s Citizens Budget Review Committee includes Georgia Division of Family and Children Services Regional Kinship Navigator Alida Sims, 12Stone Church Chief Fiance Officer Norwood Davis, ReMax Grand South Realtor Kevin Do, retired real estate appraiser Burt Manning, Georgia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Santiago Marquez, retired Gwinnett County Public Schools administrator Lisa Burleson and Total Vision Consulting LLC CEO David Cuffie.
The business plan presentations can suggest the community a crucial look into what issues their county’s government may be facing. During last year’s presentations, for example, officials from the police department and Sheriff’s Office highlighted issues with employee retention.
That opened up discussions about retention issues across all county departments, which was a factor in why county leaders chose to raise the county’s millage rate this year.
The Budget Review Panel will make recommendations to Nash and the county’s finance department on which initiatives and fresh positions requested by department goes should be funded in the two thousand eighteen budget, as well as what the county’s budget priorities should be.
Each business plan presentation will be recorded so they can be broadcast later on TVGwinnett and posted on TVgwinnett.com.
Nash’s proposed two thousand eighteen budget will be introduced to county commissioners, residents and the news media Nov. 28, and a public hearing has been scheduled for Dec. Four. The commissioners will vote on adoption of the budget at its very first meeting in January.
