We’ve spent fairly literally years now wondering why Apple doesn’t provide some kind of MFi controller bundle that’d actually make people interested in buying one, or some kind of “system seller” title to give people a real reason to grab an MFi controller. Well, it’d seem through the magic of Minecraft, Apple has eventually done just that. Right now you can get the SteelSeries Nimbus MFi Controller and Minecraft: Apple TV Edition for $40 directly from Apple.
We’re yam-sized fans of Raw Fury’s Kingdom: Fresh Grounds [$9.99]. It’s an ultra-clever kingdom building game that’s played as a sidescroller where the only interaction you have as the player is earning and spending gold. The fascinating thing about it is that through this one ordinary mechanic, the game is jam packed with all sorts of surprises. We get deeper into all this in out game of the week post, but unnecessary to say, Kingdom is a very good game.
Earlier this afternoon, Nintendo’s Super Mario Run [Free] vanished from the App Store. Like most things Nintendo does, it came with no explanation or details beyond us just noticing it was gone. My theory intensely employed Occam’s Razor (and maybe a touch of Hanlon’s Razor) in just assuming that someone screwed something up or made a mistake. As of a few moments ago, Super Mario Run is back on the App Store.
We’ve been covering the upcoming Metroidvania title Dandara for well over a year now. It’s a super clever title as they manage to pack in everything you’d expect of a Metroidvania title while coupling it with a leaping mechanic that has you launching from wall to wall. Since you can stick to walls, which direction is up and which is down is fluid, creating some amazingly fascinating exploration possibilities. We witnessed it back at GDC, and got another quick look this morning at PAX.
The digital strategy board game Armello has a heck of a story behind it. It was originally announced as an iPad title all the way back in 2011. Following a successful Kickstarter, the developers, League of Geeks, shifted gears to make the game a Steam and console title. On those platforms, the game has seen incredible success, so much so that as of this year the studio has done its sixth profit share with the development team. (You can read about this on their blog.) Anyway, back in two thousand fourteen we posted that the game would be coming to iOS “next year.” . A few years later, and we got a look at it actually running on an iPhone on the demonstrate floor of PAX West.
As many of you know, this weekend is Labor Day Weekend in the US, and even tho’ it sounds like we are supposed to work even firmer during that time, we usually don’t. So, we won’t be publishing our weekly Hearthstone [Free] roundup this week. If you’ve been keeping an eye on the Hearthstone scene last week, you’ll know that the majority of the stories are about Druid being over-powered and ruining the joy for everyone, so this roundup would have been a bit monotonous. I’m sure Blizzard is taking a pretty hard look at the state of the meta and Druid’s power levels, but it remains to be seen whether they’ll wait and see if the meta will lodge down into something that isn’t so overbearingly Druidic or whether they’ll, for the very first time, pull the nerf trigger early an bring the game back to a semblance of class balance. The weeks after an expansion hits are always tricky measure of how the game is doing, so I can understand any hesitation. I think we should know more about what Blizzard is going to do (or not do) soon.
