Larimer County authorities say the hunt for a 33-year-old fugitive ended in a multi-vehicle collision in Loveland Friday morning that sent the suspect and a family to the hospital.
Fulford was transported to Medical Center of the Rockies, where he is listed in critical condition.
Police were pursuing Fulford when the vehicle he was driving collided with a Subaru. The influence was so severe it shoved the Subaru across three lanes of traffic, over a shrub and into the parking lot of a gas station on the southwest corner.
Three females who were in the car – witnesses said they appeared to be a mother and two daughters – also were taken to the hospital. Lt. Bobby Moll of the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office said he did not have any details about their injuries.
Fulford had been on the lam since Thursday night, when he ran away from Larimer County sheriff’s deputies, commandeered a taxi and shot the driver, led police in a high-speed pursue in the cab and crashed it and then eluded deputies a 2nd time on foot.
A Fort Collins apartment building where fugitive Fulford had been hiding out was evacuated Thursday after police found weapons and suspicious-looking devices that appeared to be bombs, according to a news report by Larimer County Sheriff’s spokesman David Moore.
The taxi driver, who has not been named, was taken to a hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries after he hopped out of his taxi while it was still moving, the news release says.
The dramatic pursue began at 6:50 p.m. Thursday, when Larimer County Sheriff’s Office investigators attempted to arrest Fulford in the eight hundred block of East Drake Road in Fort Collins. Fulford was desired on felony warrants for failure to show up on a drug case, firearms charges and providing false information to a pawnbroker.
Fulford bolted when he spotted the investigators and managed to outrun deputies, according to the news release. Fort Collins police were called in and set up a perimeter. A police K9 was incapable to go after his odor.
When investigators entered the apartment where Fulford was hiding they found suspicious devices. The Larimer County Regional Bomb Squad was called in and residents of the apartment building were evacuated.
About two hours later at around 8:30 p.m., police spotted a taxi as it left the perimeter area. They followed the cab westbound toward College Avenue. The taxi turned south on College and ran a crimson light. The taxi went west on U.S. Thirty four in Loveland, north on North County Road twenty seven and east on West County Road 38E.
